The Alise San Francisco – Hotel Review
The Alise San Francisco – Hotel Review
On a recent trip to San Francisco, I came across the most fabulous hotel, The Alise. I have stayed at loads of hotels and it is not too often that I leave a hotel feeling like I wish I could permanently move in but The Alise is seriously one of those hotels!
The Alise San Francisco is a Staypineapple Hotel. The StayPineapple collection is made up of a group of 8 hotels. Hotels are located in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego, and the new Hotel Alise located in Chicago.
I am really hesitant to call Staypineapple a “chain” of hotels because that term comes with a whole set of preconceived ideas and standards that doesn’t even begin to accurately describe this hotel brand.
The Alise San Francisco was by far and away one of the best, if not the best, hotel experience I have ever had. It is easy to see why this hotel has a great ranking on TripAdvisor and has been voted one of the top hotels in San Francisco.
The Alise is located at 580 Geary St just a few blocks from Union Square. This area of San Francisco is fantastic for dining and shopping. One night we had dinner at Union Square and walked back to the hotel after dark. It was myself and two female companions and we never felt unsafe in the neighborhood.
The building that houses The Alise is a 102-year-old landmark building that has been completely rebuilt and renovated in a uniquely Staypineapple art deco style. Even though there are certain features of the building that remind you that you are in a 102-year-old building, smaller rooms, narrow hallways, winding staircases, the way Staypineapple have renovated this building is so complimentary that none of those things seem particularly bothersome but yet add to the charm of the hotel overall.
When we arrived we were greeted by the most friendly and welcoming doorman. I wish I would have gotten his name because I would love to mention him. He helped us with our bags, thru check-in, and showed us to our rooms. He was very knowledgeable about the building, the company, and had many suggestions for our stay.
I stayed in a Celebrity King room, which the largest room The Alise offers. However, as mentioned before, compared to the size of other hotel rooms in the same category it was relatively small. I NEED to say though that after the initial thought of “wow this is small” I NEVER even noticed it again for my entire stay. Why? Well because the room was the most well-appointed room I have ever stayed in.
Whoever is responsible for the interior design and amenities in this room should really be designing hotel rooms for every brand out there. I could write a whole dissertation trying to list all the details and amenities in this room but let me try to point out a “few”:
I am sure I am forgetting something in the list. Oh, and the daily pineapple cupcakes and welcome coffee in the reception. You HAVE to try these cupcakes they are fabulous. Also, complimentary pineapple infused water in the lobby.
The Alise also houses the Pineapple Bistro and Bar serving signature cocktails and bistro food. We sampled some of the cocktails and they were not only gorgeous but also yummy. The Pineapple Bistro food is very tasty, made from great ingredients, and at a fantastic price. Be sure to check out the Pineapple Bistro for breakfast especially if you are in a rush. Their bagels with signature spreads are so good! Also, surprising was how moderately priced the food was for such great quality.
One thing they really highlight at The Alise is that they are a dog-friendly hotel. The Alise even have their own mascot pooch, Dash the Pineapple Pup. Dash is so posh he even has his own Instagram, @dashthepineapplepup, which Staypineapple encourage guests to contribute to using the hashtag #DashaAdventures.
The pet fee is $25/day which allows two dogs without a weight restriction to stay per guest room. How great is that? I know from personal experience that it can be exceedingly hard to find a pet-friendly hotel that doesn’t have a weight restriction. PLUS, when you pooches check-in they will receive the Staypineapple treatment as well. Goodies for your pups include a dog bed, water bowl, doggie treats, and poo bags with a dispenser. All which are yours to keep except the bed.
One thing I also want to recognize about The Alise is the staff. Everyone we encountered during our stay was so friendly and welcoming. I also carefully watched them interact with other hotel guests and their friendly service was universal.
Another thing that really stood out was how knowledgeable about the brand and how enthusiastic about their job they were. I don’t think I have every stayed at a hotel where the staff knew so much about the history of the building, the company for which they worked, the thought process behind how the hotel was decorated, the sourcing of the food we ate, and so on. Not only were they super informed but I could also tell they were super passionate about their job and genuinely enjoyed it.
One particular person that stood out was Jedd in the bar. He is so witty, charismatic, and just overall a great ambassador for the hotel and the Staypineapple brand. Make sure you say hello to him while you are there.
Overall, this was one of the most enjoyable hotel stays. I will always look for Staypineapple properties in whatever city I am visiting as a first choice because it was THAT fantastic.
