Goodbye 2017, Hello 2018
Goodbye 2017, Hello 2018
2017 was such a roller-coaster for me. I had some amazing travel experiences and found some new favorite cities like Vienna, Austria and Erfurt, Germany! I also moved to Germany and then moved back to the US. I broke up with my partner of 4 years (hence the move to Germany and the move back). So, I think it goes without saying, I was really, REALLY ready to kiss 2017 good-bye and step in to the new year.
It is strange to look back at my 2016 year end post and step back into my mindset then and all the plans laid before me. I guess, as the old saying goes, even the best laid plans go awry. Besides my usual travel planning, this year I will try and let go of all the expectations of life and let what will be, be. Hopefully when I read back on this post in 2019 all my feelings in this post will be just as foreign to me, but in the very best of ways.
I think the best way to get over a bad break-up is to have something amazing to look forward to. That is why I wasted no time in getting some destinations on my travel radar for 2018.
At the end of April, I will be embarking on my first trip to New Zealand and Australia. While I will get to spend a fair about of time in New Zealand, Australia will be somewhat of a whirlwind adventure. Stopping in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane after the Australian tour of my favorite band, Biffy Clyro.
I have some amazing friends in based in Wellington and I am super excited to spend some time with them and explore their fabulous home country. Auckland and Wellington are in the plan with several side trips and a long-weekend get-a-way to Queenstown is in the works. I am so excited and looking forward to experiencing exactly why everyone raves about New Zealand.
Shortly after returning home from that journey, I am going on an Alaskan Cruise with Norwegian Cruise Lines!!! Really excited for this because I have only had one other cruise experience in the Bahamas which was less than appealing. I also have never been to Alaska so I am looking forward to having a great Alaskan experience. I am going with family and family friends so it will be a bit of a different travel experience than solo female travel or traveling with my partner.
Anyone have any tips for me? Totally open to hearing them since I am still trying to figure out what excursions we should take and what not-to-miss things are at each port of call.
Lastly, I will be heading to Las Vegas in September for a little fun and sun. I’ve been to Las Vegas many times and know that there is no shortage of things to do and see in Sin City. It has been a few years since I have been there so I am hoping to stay in a cool casino hotel that I haven’t stayed at before (still deciding on this) and experience some of the attractions that weren’t there my last go ‘round like the High Roller Ferris Wheel. I am totally afraid of heights and seeing how it is the “tallest Ferris wheel in the United States” I’m a little apprehensive! Yes, I am a totally chicken when it comes to heights.
Moving back to the United States from Germany has forced me to also re-think the focus of my blog. While I have traveled extensively in and around Germany, this year my focus will shift a bit to include more about my native Oregon and the wonderful adventures to be had in the PNW (Pacific Northwest).
I love Europe, my heart will always be in Europe, but I need to take a small break from it. So that when I return it will be filled with fresh experiences that are untainted by memories of the past. That doesn’t mean that I won’t be posting about it because I have so much to say and information to give about my favorite continent. It simply means that, for myself, I am giving myself some distance and space to heal and for all my awesome readers it means more great content on new exciting destinations for me (Australia/New Zealand) and also destinations that are near and dear to me (like PNW).
