Zollenspieker Fährhaus Hamburg Review
Zollenspieker Fährhaus Hamburg Review
Wow, what an experience. I was lucky enough to be invited to stay at Zollenspieker Fährhaus on my most recent trip to Hamburg, Germany and all I have to say is wow. Zollenspieker Fährhaus is a 4-star hotel that opened in May 2012.
The hotel is environmentally conscious and is a member of the association “Environmental Partnership Hamburg”. This hotel was built with many energy-saving measures so as to contribute to the environmental and climate protection of the region in which the hotel was built.
This hotel is by far and away one of the nicest hotels I have had the pleasure of staying at with the most fantastic views of the Elbe River and the marsh.
Zollenspieker Fährhaus has two buildings on the property, the historic house, and the hotel. I stayed in a “studio room” in the main hotel building and it was fabulous. The room was huge, it was literally like a really nice studio apartment. It has an amazing bathroom with a separate tub/shower, double sinks, and a glass wall the looked out into the living area. This allowed for you to take in the amazing Elbe River view even in the bathroom.
The living area was large with two large couches and a TV in the middle. The tv could be rotated to be viewed from the comfort of the bed or the couches. There is free wi-fi and a large work desk. A pay mini bar is also stalked with all kinds of snacks and drinks for your indulgence.
The room had large floor to ceiling windows which opened to a faux balcony and breathe-taking view over the marsh land on the Elbe River. You can watch the tide go in and out and the sunrise, in good weather, is picture worthy. Unfortunately, the weather did not corporate during my stay but the view was amazing none the less.
One thing to be aware of, and there are warning stickers on the door, is that because of the location on the river there are mosquitoes. Yes, even in winter. It advises you to keep the windows shut if possible to keep out mosquitoes but it was quite hot in the room and so I often had them open to get fresh air. I did get bit by a mosquito so if this is something that bothers you take note and keep the windows closed.
The room was so fantastic I could have easily just holed up in it all day taking bath after bath and enjoying the gorgeous view. However, the property has so many other great things that would have been a waste.
Zollenspieker Fährhaus has a fabulous spa with separate changing areas for men and woman. The changing room and sauna area were nice, clean, and seem to be pretty new. Local residents can purchase day passes or for the spa however when we were there it was relatively quiet. There is a Finnish Sauna, Aroma Sauna, Steam Sauna, and Bio Sauna. As well as several different relaxation areas and cold dip for your feet. The sauna area is a great feature of the hotel and access is included in the price of your room.
You must absolutely eat at the on-site restaurant there. It was simply fabulous. Far and away one of the best meals we had experienced in a long while and the service was impeccable. There are several different “restaurants” on the property but, in reality, it is one big restaurant with several different sitting areas spread out throughout the property. There is a wine bar, beer garden, sun terrace, and more formal dining room in the historic house called the “winter garden”. We chose a table in the formal dining room and the food was fantastic.
I would totally love to share many pics of the fantastic food. However, truth be told, I was so engrossed and in love with what I was eating that I completely forgot!
Reservation is accepted and I would suggest it. We started our meal at 7 pm and by the time we had finished the restaurant looked extremely crowded as if it was the place to be in the community on a Thursday night. I think that even speaks volumes about the quality of the food and atmosphere.
Speaking of food, the morning breakfast buffet is absolutely worth the 19 euro charge. I normally don’t advocate spending that much on breakfast at a hotel BUT breakfast at the Zollenspieker Fährhaus is the exception.
As with dinner, the breakfast was phenomenal. It had the most assorted choices I have seen in all of Germany. Everything from a made to order omelet station, to all you can drink champagne. Show up hungry and be ready for a great breakfast. There was something for everyone and the food was quality.
Non-guests can pay to eat at the buffet for 22 euros. It seemed like there were a fair number of people from the community who had come to enjoy breakfast and the gorgeous view. Even though there were many people eating, there is plenty of seating. Also, the items were continually re-stocked which is something I appreciate.
I loved this hotel so much I would love to visit again. Especially in the summer when you can enjoy all the outside space on the banks of the Elbe.
One thing to note is that while the Zollenspieker Fährhaus is advertised in Hamburg (and it technically is) it outside of the city. It took about 25 minutes by car to reach the hotel from the city center. If we had not had a car this would have been a problem.
There is a bus line that runs from the hotel to city center in 45 minutes. However, I am not sure on the frequency of this bus. I would double check before booking if you do not have your own transportation.
If you are looking to be right downtown Hamburg than this hotel is not for you.
Having said that, I would certainly make any and all efforts to stay at this property as it is outstanding. It was a nice getaway outside the city. The Zollenspieker Fährhaus has such wonderful views and such an amazing atmosphere. I really enjoyed being able to see another side of Hamburg. I don’t think you get that from only staying and wondering around in the city.
